Guide to SASSA SRD R350 Application: The Government of South Africa continues to offer the SASSA Social Relief of Distress Grant (SRD 350), a grant of R350 per month for 6 months to be paid to individuals who are currently unemployed, do not receive any form of income, social grant or UIF payment etc, and include both Refugees and Asylum Seeker permit holders. More than 3, 5 million people have applied for the new special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant within three days of the system going live.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) started taking nationwide applications for the grant on Monday, 11 May 2020. As of today, 3 585 040 applications were received. Of this, the largest number of 2 394 949 applications were made using the USSD (SMS) line, 204 434 on the website, 485 657 on WhatsApp and 500 00 were on email. 

When Is the Payment Date for April 2023 SASSA SRD R350 Grant?

Now it is confirmed that payment dates start from Tuesday, 4th April, 2023. Many of you have been eagerly awaiting these payments, and we want to assure you that we are doing everything in our power to make sure that they are processed as quickly and efficiently as possible. Our grant will assist individuals and families who are struggling financially as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How To Apply For SASSA SRD R350 Grant

The applications are currently being assessed and verified. Those eligible will be notified and will start to receive their first payment of the 6-month Special Covid19 SRD Grant of R350 by Friday – 15 May. 

The grant is implemented in terms of the existing avenue provided for by the SRD channel, which is administered in accordance with the provisions as set in the Social Assistance Act, 2004. 

The Department wishes to stress that the first payment file was meant for testing. When the payment system is finalised more regular payments will be made.

Once an application has been approved, Sassa will ask for banking details. Those who have not been asked for banking details must know that they are not going to be paid tomorrow.

We appeal to people to wait to be contacted and not visit Sassa offices.

“The special COVID-19 SRD Grant is intended to mitigate the undue hardships faced by individuals and families through this difficult time. We are pleased with the intake so far and we urge all eligible individuals to apply on time,” said Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu.

“Once again, we appeal to those already receiving social grants not to apply as they are not eligible for the Special Covid-19 SRD Grant. It is only meant to benefit persons who are currently not receiving any form of income support from government,” added Minister Zulu.

An applicant must be a South African Citizen, Permanent Resident or Refugee who is registered on the Home Affairs system and is a resident within the borders of the Republic of South Africa.

“To ensure that the information system is not clogged, we appeal to all applicants not to upload any form of documentation on the application,” concluded Minister Zulu.

How to update your information for the SASSA SRD R350 Grant Reapplication?

You can update your personal information for the COVID-19 SRD R350 Grant online. People applying for the grant can update their personal information if it was initially provided incorrectly on the SRD website and/or alter their responses to the screening questions previously asked in their sassa application. This can be done as from Friday 1 July 2023 on the SASSA website at srd.sassa.gov.za. Those who would like to update their original screening questions for the April and May 2022 assessment Periods, should update their information by no later than 7 July 2023.

How to complete SASSA SRD R350 Reapplication?

  1. Visit the SASSA website at srd.sassa.gov.za
  2. Click ‘Reconfirm you grant application’
  3. Login in with your South African ID number and Mobile number
  4. Update your details
  5. Resubmit the application

It should be noted that all SRD R350 grant applicants will need to reconfirm / reapply for their grant applications at least once every 3 months.

Eligibility for the R350 Grant

Remember as well that in order to be eligible for the SR R350 Grant you must meet the following criteria:

  • Only for South African Citizens, Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders
  • Must be between the ages of 18 and 60 years
  • Only for those who have insufficient means, not receiving receive social grants on behalf of herself/ himself or who are not contributing to or eligible for UIF payment
  • Those who have no financial support from any other source

What is the SRD R350 Appeals Deadline?

The COVID-19 SRD R350 Grant has an 90-day appeals process deadline. This means that anyone with a rejected or failed status has up to 90 days to lodge an appeal.
