How to Check SASSA Balance: Once your SASSA grant application has been successfully approved and paid, your grant money will be available via your chosen payment method (personal bank account, SASSA gold card or cash collection points). You do NOT have to withdraw all your funds straight away, it will remain available until you are ready to make a withdrawal.

Ways to check your SASSA Balance

If you would like to check how much grant money you have available (your SASSA Balance), there are various ways you can find out, which we will discuss below.

One of the main requirements of SASSA grant holders is for each individual to have a mobile phone to receive updates regarding their status. You can check your SASSA Balance in one of three ways:

1) Check your SASSA Balance on your cellphone:

  • Dial *120*3210# on your cellphone
  • Follow the necessary prompts
  • (Should this USSD method not work, be sure to follow Step number 2)

2) Check your SASSA Balance on your cellphone:

  • Dial *120*69277#
  • Follow each step
  • You should then get an SMS notification

3) Check your SASSA Balance on WhatsApp:

  • Add the SASSA WhatsApp contact number to your phone: 082 046 8553
  • Send the word “SASSA” to the SASSA WhatsApp number via the app
  • Reply to the next message with the word “Status”
  • If you have a reference number, reply to the next message with “Yes”
  • Reply to the next message with your mobile number (this must be the same mobile number you used when applying for the grant)
  • Reply to the last message with your reference number

The department recently set up the special Covid-19 R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant more commonly known as the SRD R350 grant. This is a grant of R350 per month for 6 months which is to be paid to individuals who are currently unemployed, do not receive any form of income, social grant or UIF payment. What if my application for grant payment has been rejected?

Some people are finding when they do the status check that their grant payment is being declined with a response ‘Registered at SARS for PAYE’ or ‘Receiving a source of income’. It must be noted that according to SASSA requirements, in order to qualify for the grant, the applicant needs to be unemployed (and not have any source of income). As well as not receiving UIF or any other grants.

However, as of July 2021, this does not include people receiving a child support grant. SASSA have reported that when an application is currently declined, it is usually as the applicant has an income greater than R595 / month, excluding any child grant. How to Check SASSA Balance

SASSA R350 Grant Application Status Update

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu made a statement to say that nine million people South African people have applied for the SASSA Covid SRD R350 grant. There have been reports of long queues at pay points where the R350 is being paid (due to the millions of applications) The minister recommends that users provide their bank account details where possible so the R350 can be paid directly into their accounts.

Providing you banking details as a payment method can speed up the cash payments. Most grant recipients have been using the money for food.

From September 22nd, as well as the Post Office, you can also collect your R350 social relief grant from Pick n Pay & Boxer stores in South Africa. You will need to have received the SMS to say your grant is ready.

Make sure you bring your cellular phone and ID to the store when you collect. This means that there will be access to cash for those people who do not have a bank account. Payments can also be received via Bank Mobile Money Transfers.

Remember, only visit after you have received an SMS telling you your grant is ready.
