How to Submit an Appeal for the SASSA R350 SRD Grant

Your SASSA SRD R350 grant could be declined for various reasons, whatever the reason might be, you are allowed to dispute the rejection by lodging an appeal.

Appeals are to be submitted within 30 days of receiving the status and are to be submitted through the DSD appeals website.

To lodge an appeal follow the steps below:

The Independent Tribunal will receive your appeal submission and will update you on the outcome within 60 – 90 days from the day the appeal was lodged.

For each month that a person is rejected by SASSA, an appeal application must be filed. Therefore, the Independent Tribunal’s ruling will only apply to the particular month to which the appeal relates. There will be no further internal appeals allowed; the Independent Tribunal’s ruling is final. In accordance with the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act of 2000, the appellant has 180 days from the date of the Independent Tribunal’s judgment to file an appeal with the High Court for judicial review.

How SASSA Appeal Status Check for R350 Works

The Minister of Social Development has appointed individuals to serve as members of civil society of the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals to consider and decide on appeals relating to Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (Covid-19 SRD).

According to section 18 of the Social Assistance Act of 2004 read together with the Covid-19 SRD Regulations, the Independent Tribunal is mandated to review appeals. It is tasked to also consider any appeals related to the Covid-19 SRD Regulations’ qualifying conditions. The SASSA decision on R30 applications is to be reviewed by the Independent Tribunal in light of the evidence at its disposal.

As the Covid-19 SRD is reevaluated and paid by SASSA on a monthly basis, an appeal application must be filed in regard to each month in which a person is denied by SASSA in order to demonstrate that they are still in need of the Covid-19 SRD. 1. Visit the SRD website and click on the relevant button, either “SA ID Holder” or “Asylum Seekers and Special Permit Holders”.
2. Scroll down to “Lodging an appeal”
3. Click on the DSD appeals website link: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/
4. Click on the green bar written: “click here to lodge an appeal or check appeal status”.
5. Enter your ID number and phone number used when applying.
6. Click on send pin and wait for the SMS with the verification code.
7. Once received, enter the pin and proceed to submit.
8. Choose the month you would like to check the R350 grant for.
9. The status will be displayed, it could be approved, declined, or pending.

Why Your SASSA R350 Grant Has Been Declined

The SA Social Security Agency (SASSA) has listed several reasons why applications for the R350 social relief of distress grant may be declined by the agency.

One of the major reasons why many applications are declined is that applicants have other identified sources of income or are registered for assistance with Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) and National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

Applicants who have been declined have 30 days (from the day their status was updated) to submit an appeal for reconsideration.
